In the 1940s, a physical chemist, Michael Szwarc, discovered some interesting things about dimer, a powdered chemical compound. He found that when heated, it undergoes pyrolysis and transforms into a gas. When the product is cooled and introduced to a vacuum chamber, it polymerizes and forms a film, called parylene. It wasn’t until the 1960′s that William Gorham found a method for applying the film to surfaces.
