Learning More About The Definition Of The Description “Organic”

The word “Organic” is now the commonly repeated word that is used by the health conscious consumer. It seems like everyone is looking for naturally produced food, and entire industries have emerged and thrived solely based around the existence of this practice. It’s all the rage these days, and the trend doesn’t seem as if it will ever slow down, since we’ve all learned about the dangers of chemicals inside food. What is the real meaning of the word organic though? It has been seen that many items use the word organic and for this reason, the US government has taken steps to regulate its application to food products.

The term organic basically means the kind of food that has been produced by not using any pesticides, synthetic hormones of genetically modified organisms. It must be planted using natural fertilizers and natural insect controlled ways. It is therefore not produced using the conventional method of agriculture.

Take the foods such as meat, the organic livestock from which meat is obtained must be allowed to eat natural grain and be led outdoors for it to qualify as organic. It is the same story for the cows who give us organic milk or other dairy products.

Organic foods are in many classifications, so that the one labeled 100% is given the USDA Organic seal to show that it is wholly organic.

Again if the item showed a label with a single word, “Organic,” it actually shows that the item is not wholly organic, but may only be up to 95% even if it may bear the seal.

Labels should be checked very carefully, because if it reads something like, “made with organic ingredients,” it means that it has a minimum of 75% organic ingredients and therefore cannot qualify for the USDA seal. The label may also state “contains organic ingredients,” and that automatically means the item has lower than 70% organic ingredients and as such cannot be sealed with the USDA seal.

Though the labels might be confusing, people should be serious about this and identify them since this will be the first step to a healthy living. Using organic foods help to reduce the dangerous chemicals that are used to grow food and which find their way to the human body. They are things like pesticides and other chemical fertilizers.

Nowadays a good number of shops have introduced special counters with organic foods and so you should make sure to remind your local store manager, just in case they do not stock them.
